Mount Zion UMC runners raise funds for two Upstate causes

GREENVILLE—A group of United Methodist runners in the Upstate laced up recently to raise funds for two local charities.

The team, comprising people from Mount Zion United Methodist Church, Central, plus a few others outside the church, participated in the Spinx Run Fest in Greenville Saturday, Oct. 26.

Between the 1-mile fun run, the 5K and the half-marathon, the team ran a combined 41 miles.

They were motivated to raise money in memory of John Wisham, runner Lynn Martin’s husband, who died in August 2018. Wisham was an active supporter of the Central and Clemson communities and of Mount Zion UMC. The money raised was split between the two causes Wisham cared a great deal about: Clemson Community Care, an organization that helps families in need in the area, and a landscaping project that will make Mount Zion UMC’s facilities more accessible.

“Our goal was to raise $10,000, and so far, we have raised $6,500,” said the Rev. Jonathan Harris, Mount Zion’s pastor, applauding his fellow members on the team. Harris also ran in the Spinx Run Fest.

Beth Westbury, South Carolina UMC conference treasurer, also was part of the team, participating in the half-marathon.

“I did not know John, but I was impressed that Mount Zion wanted to raise money in memory of him and to do it with team of runners,” Westbury said. ”I wanted to be a part of that team to celebrate his life and to help support the church family in their missions. I thank the Rev. Jonathan Harris for inviting me to the team.

“I hope this event will raise awareness about the mission and ministry of Mount Zion and motivate other United Methodists to use health, fitness, and recreation as a means of ministry.”
