Advocate wins two more journalism excellence awards

The South Carolina United Methodist Advocate has been honored with two more journalism excellence awards this spring.

These latest are from the Religion Communicators Council, an interfaith group of religious communicators founded in 1929.

The Advocate newspaper was the category winner in the RCC’s annual DeRose-Hinkhouse Memorial Awards for Periodicals: Newspapers—Series. As well, Advocate Editor Jessica Brodie was the category winner for her feature article, "The Salvation of Mass Incarceration," (March 2020 Advocate, https://advocatesc.org/2020/02/the-salvation-of-mass-incarceration) in the Writing for Periodicals Cover or Feature Item—Single Work category.
These latest awards bring the Advocate’s total to 123 wins since 2010.

“This paper reflects an amazing amount of skill and effort,” one of the judges said in its review of the Advocate. “I had no idea there was so much SC Methodist news to share!”

This year’s panel of judges included professionals from educational institutions, religious organizations and private marketing teams. The annual DeRose-Hinkhouse Memorial Awards are given to active members of RCC who demonstrate excellence in religious communication and public relations. The awards are named in honor of the late Victor DeRose and the late Paul M. Hinkhouse, leading lithographers in New York City, and longtime friends of the RCC. Both men shared a strong interest in, and concern for excellence in communications.
