Advocate awards SMC rising freshman Garrison Burrows with $1,000 college scholarship
The South Carolina United Methodist Advocate has selected Garrison Burrows, a rising freshman at Spartanburg Methodist College, as the newspaper’s 2021 college scholarship recipient.
While his major is undeclared, Burrows has a strong interest in a journalism, broadcasting or computer science career and will receive $1,000 from the Advocate toward his studies at SMC in the 2021-2022 academic year.
The Advocate’s scholarship is for students who are South Carolina United Methodists and who are planning to enroll or are already enrolled at one of the four United Methodist colleges in South Carolina: Claflin University, Columbia College, Spartanburg Methodist College or Wofford College.
The scholarship is available to students with an interest in communications, journalism or business.
Burrows has been an active member of Mount Horeb United Methodist Church, Lexington, and is passionate about the intersection of journalism and the church.
“I believe that journalism is important in ministry because it helps the church reach not only new people, but also encourage existing members to come to more events through engagement,” he wrote in his application letter. “The advent of social media also allows a church to quickly share events which happen throughout the year, and can encourage members to bring friends to them, bringing in more people to the church.”
The application process for the Advocate 2022 scholarship has begun, with a deadline of March 1, 2022.
