Advocate wins 'best paper' in division from state press association

Newspaper honored with three other awards

The Advocate has been named the best newspaper publication in its division by the S.C. Press Association.

The newspaper won first place in the press association s annual news contest, Associate/Individual Member Division, as well as three other writing and photography awards:

Advocate Editor Jessica Connor won second place for Best Published Feature Story for her article, The Bridge, which appeared in the Advocate s April 2012 edition.

Matt Brodie won second and third place for Best Published Photograph for his photos Playing Superman and Mobbed, respectively, both from the September 2012 edition.

The awards were given out March 23 at the press association s annual meeting and awards gala in Greenville.

The board of the Advocate is proud of the excellent paper we publish each month and are especially pleased that organizations like the SCPA recognize as outstanding what we on the board have come to expect as ˜that's just the way we do things, said the Rev. Steve King, Advocate board chair.

Competition in the Advocate s division included The Voice, the S.C. Policy Council, USC Magazine Group, SCBIZ, the Murrells Inlet Messenger and S.C. Farm Bureau, among many others.

These recent wins bring the tally to nearly 40 awards the Advocate has achieved in the last three years.
