Advocate Press releases two new titles

The Advocate Press has released two more books this month: “Having Coffee with God,” by Mark Barnette, and “Stories from My Journey,” by the Rev. Arthur Holt.

This brings the total to 35 books produced since 2017 by the Advocate Press, which is  publishing division of the Advocate newspaper.

In “Having Coffee with God,” Barnette explores what it would be like to sit down for a cup of coffee with God: What would God say? How would you react and respond?

After years of spiritual wilderness, God distinctly spoke to Barnette one day while he was driving a golf cart around his neighborhood. Since that day, Barnette has enjoyed regular, casual—though immensely humbling—coffee-style conversations with the Lord of the Universe. In this book, he offers those conversations to readers in an attempt to convey the messages God gave him.

As Barnette explains, all who believe in God will serve him in different ways.

“Others will glorify God in more dramatic, widely publicized, and certainly more effective ways than I. My calling is softer and quieter, mere words on a page,” he writes. “What follows, then, are in some cases dialogues with God and offered as such. Others are pieces inspired by my conversations with God. In all cases I was moved to write what the Lord has told me. I do this not out of boastfulness or arrogance, but out of humility, amazed that the Lord would use one such as me.”

In part prophecy and in part a beginner’s primer on faith, “Having Coffee with God” is intended to be an inspiring, God-centered book for anyone seeking a deeper relationship with their creator.

In “Stories from My Journey,” Holt offers his third book of reflections. Holt spent more than four decades in the ministry as a South Carolina United Methodist pastor, serving people in small towns and big across South Carolina. But before that, he enjoyed a sometimes idyllic, often humorous upbringing in the Upstate community of Whitney, with a childhood filled with friends and stories that made him the man he is today.

Here, he shared about how the stories of his journey shaped him, teaching him important lessons about faith, relationships and the unconditional love of God.
