Bowman Back to School Bash empowers students
The Bowman community’s third annual Back to School Bash was hosted by New Covenant United Methodist Church and partners: Cedar Grove UMC, Forest Chapel UMC, United Hope Ministries Church and New Mount Zion Baptist Church.
The event took place on Saturday, Aug. 3, on New Covenant UMC grounds and surrounding areas, drawing hundreds of local students and families eager to prepare for the upcoming school year.
This community-driven event provided backpacks, school supplies, free haircuts, food and a day filled with fun activities, ensuring that every child starts the academic year with the tools and confidence needed for success.
The event was held from 1-6 p.m. and featured a range of attractions, including games and live entertainment. More than 250 students received backpacks filled with notebooks, pencils and other essential supplies. Students also received more than 300 giveaways, and more than 450 meals were served.
The community pastors, along with the mayor of Bowman, offered special prayers and words of encouragement for the students, school administrators, teachers and school supporting staff, families and community.
“This event is more than just a school supply giveaway,” said Deron Little, event coordinator of the Bowman Community Back to School Bash. “It’s about bringing the community together to support our children and show them that they have a network of people who care about their success. We want every student to walk into school on the first day feeling prepared and confident.”
For many families in the Bowman community, this event is a lifeline. With the rising cost of school supplies, the event alleviates a significant financial burden.
The community involvement was a key factor in the event’s success. Local churches, Bowman High School alumni, local businesses and organizations stepped up to donate money and supplies, sponsor activities and volunteer their time.
“This event is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together,” said Otis Boyd, a member of Forest Chapel UMC. “Seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces made all of the hard work worth it.”
As the event wrapped up, organizers reflected on its impact and looked forward to continuing the tradition next year.
“We’re already thinking about how we can make next year’s bash even bigger and better,” Little said. “We want to reach even more students and ensure that every child in our community has what they need to succeed.”
Organizers offer deep thanks to all the partners and sponsors who took part in the Back to School Bash. For those interested in supporting the bash or getting involved in future events, the Planning Committee welcomes donations and volunteers.
