Bethel UMC, Other Churches to Hold Green Festival Sept. 25
Bethel United Methodist Church, along with Beth Shalom Synagogue, Forest Lake Presbyterian, North Trenholm Baptist, St. Michael and All Angels’ Episcopal and Tree of Life Congregation are planning the Forest Acres Green Festival.
{mosimage}COLUMBIA – Six congregations in the North Trenholm Road area are collaborating on a project that encourages sustainable living and building practices.
Bethel United Methodist Church, along with Beth Shalom Synagogue, Forest Lake Presbyterian, North Trenholm Baptist, St. Michael and All Angels’ Episcopal and Tree of Life Congregation are planning the Forest Acres Green Festival.
The festival will be held Saturday, Sept. 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at three locations:
1. Forest Lake Presbyterian Church – Habitat for Humanity will construct an EarthCraft certified house in the parking lot, using energy-saving materials and appliances. Vendors who sell environmentally friendly building supplies will exhibit. Environmental organizations will share their expertise about sustainable living. Jewelry and crafts will be available for purchase. Musical groups from local schools will perform. Forest Acres restaurants will be selling food.
2. North Trenholm Baptist Church – Craft activities for children using materials from nature and recycled materials. Fun on inflatables such as bungee runs, bounce houses, etc. Kid friendly food will be available from Forest Acres restaurants.
3. St. Michael and All Angels’ Episcopal Church – Recycling of tires, electronic equipment, paper, cans, plastic and small appliances by Richland County. Education for youth (in their outdoor chapel) about recycling. Document shredding.
The next day, Sunday, Sept. 26, there will be a farmers’ market at Forest Lake Presbyterian sponsored by Tree of Life from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Work will continue on the Habitat house.
This festival provides an opportunity for these six congregations to demonstrate to the community their commitment to conserving resources by building and remodeling in a responsible way and by adopting sustainable living practices.
