Hands to Work—Hearts to God: United Methodist Women annual meeting

The 46th annual meeting of the South Carolina Conference United Methodist Women held at Central United Methodist Church in Florence October 26-27, 2018 is now history, and attendees said the event was wonderful.

The theme was “Hands to Work—Hearts to God.” The Scripture reference was Romans 12:10-11 (NLT): “Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically.”

The presenters and the participants came together to explore how to make that Scripture come alive in the lives of the United Methodist Women of this state.

The Bible study leader was Dr. Reginald Lee, congregational specialist for the Florence and Marion districts.

Keynote speaker was the Rev. Meg Bryce Jiunnies, minister of faith formation and discipleship at Central UMC.

Communion officiants were the Rev. Terry Fleming, Florence District superintendent, and the Rev. William F. Malambri III, pastor of Central UMC. Fleming delivered the communion sermon.

Workshops were held on practical matters facing churches today: Domestic Abuse Conversation; Limitless Team; Mental Health Issues; What About Our Money? A Faith Response/Mission u Study; A Way Forward Conversation; and Aging Well: Retirement Planning.

A pre-conference tour of Lighthouse Ministries of Florence was provided, and gifts were taken from attendees. A preview of materials needed by local units and reading program participants was provided in the Resource Room. Dr. Don Grice provided the organ music, and the Florence District Praise and Worship Choir performed.

Attendees also got the opportunity to hear from two young United Methodist Women scholarship winners.

Organizers give thanks to all who worked with prayer and diligence to make this meeting pleasant and meaningful. Among many others were Marlene Spencer, outgoing president; Cathy Ford, program chairperson and incoming president; Peggy Knight, president of the local chapter at Central UMC; and, Azilee Dickey, president of the Florence District UMW.

The next annual meeting will be at Buncombe Street UMC, Greenville, Oct. 25-26, 2019.
