Low registration forces cancellation of UMCSC Latino ministry training

Pentecost Journey—a training event that would have helped local churches craft a plan for ministry with Hispanic-Latino neighbors—has been cancelled.

Organized by the Hispanic-Latino Task Force of the South Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, the event was scheduled for Oct. 6-7 in North Charleston to help non-Hispanic-Latino churches take their first steps in ministry with their local Latino neighbors. South Carolina’s Resident Bishop Jonathan Holston was slated to be a part of the event.

However, low registration forced the task force to cancel the event, said the Rev. Emily Sutton, chair of the task force; only one church signed up to participate.

Sutton said they plan to offer specialized training for that congregation, and they will gather as a task force to determine next steps and what they may do differently in the future when it comes to being in ministry with the large Hispanic-Latino population in South Carolina.

“We hope in the future to offer further training as we seek to make disciples of all people for the transformation of the world,” Sutton said.
