UMC again assembling Christmas stockings for children in Haiti
United Methodists in South Carolina are again invited to help children in Haiti get Christmas stockings through South Carolina United Methodist Volunteers in Mission.
The stockings will be filled with hygiene items and a small toy and delivered directly to the children courtesy of UMVIM’s Dr. Hal Crosswell, who has a way to get the stockings to the children through the Methodist Church of Haiti.
The project hopes to share hope and the love of Christ with the children.
The project is open to all, from churches, men’s and women’s groups, Sunday school classes, small/life groups and individuals.
The stockings will be distributed by the Methodist Church of Haiti in the Jeremie region to the needy children at Christmas, who otherwise would not have a gift.
Stockings should include the following items, all placed in a one- or two-gallon size Ziplock bag:
Large tube of toothpaste
Toothbrush
Bath-size bar of soap (e.g. Dial)
Large plastic bottle of shampoo
One washcloth
One comb
One pair of child’s underwear (new, girls or boys)
One small toy (e.g. a stuffed animal)
One bag of mints or hard candy
Those contributing the stockings are encouraged to put a Christmas sticker on outside of bag to make it more festive, as well as to label the bag “M” for male and “F” for female based on the underwear included.
They should also include $1 for each Christmas stocking to help cover shipping expenses.
When assembled, kits should be delivered to the United Methodist Volunteers in Missions warehouse in Leesville, SC: 117 West Church St. Batesburg, SC 29006.
Final deadline to deliver kits: Nov. 10 (but the earlier the better).
