- Awake: UM pastor releases debut album penned during husband’s struggle with cancer By Jessica Connor. The Rev. Elise Erikson Barrett knows what it’s like to drift through life on autopilot, pushing your own needs aside so you can put commitments and even life’s tragedies at the fore. A self-described lifelong perfectionist, Barrett heeded the call of others’ expectations to the point where she was masking her own desires, her own feelings. If she didn’t feel them, they couldn’t get in the way, she rationalized. And so it went. But when her husband, fellow United Methodist pastor Chris Barrett, was diagnosed with stage IV non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2012, she encountered the kind of wake-up call few others experience.
- Higher ed, campus ministry board to see expanded size By Jessica Connor. The group overseeing United Methodist colleges and campus ministries will see its size significantly expanded. At their fall meeting, Connectional Ministries approved a new, larger structure for the Board of Higher Education and Campus Ministries. Previously, the BHECM had a very large board because they have a very large scope of work; they are responsible not only for oversight of the four United Methodist colleges in S.C., plus campus ministries and chaplains at those and other colleges in the state. But with the new structure for District and Conference Connectional Ministries enacted in 2012 and 2013, the BHECM was reduced to just three to five people, plus six ex officio members—not nearly enough to handle the workload, CCM leaders said.

With a jeans-clad, lipstick-wearing Mary Magdalene. With a cigarette-smoking motorcycle gang. With a wealthy man and his sports car. With a business-suited woman doing her best to ignore the poor. But no matter the reaction to them, the 45 images that comprise fashion photographer Michael Belk’s Journeys with the Messiah reflect a parable-like message, attempting to tell Gospel stories in a fresh, simple and powerful way that brings true relevance to Scripture.

- Imagine No Illiteracy By Bishop Jonathan Holston. Recently, I attended a meeting where my attention span was uniquely challenged. It was the kind of meeting where you check your watch every 30 seconds or so. Then a statement was made that captivated my attention. In the midst of my boredom, a colleague raised a question; namely, “Can you imagine no illiteracy?”
