Eight-sided wonder: McBee Chapel UMC

On a lightly traveled street in Upstate South Carolina sits a historical gem that just happens to be one of three octagonal-shaped churches in the nation: McBee Chapel United Methodist Church. McBee is tiny, with maybe 15 or 20 still attending the 176-year-old former mill church. But it is doing its best to revitalize, and its new pastor is hoping it will soon have a reputation as much for its commitment to ministry as for its unique shape and history.

Orangeburg’s Imagine a Miracle Music Fest nets $11K+ for malaria relief

United Methodists across the Orangeburg District this fall combined their musical talents with a passion for connectionalism in a festival that raised more than $11,000 for Imagine No Malaria. The district presented its Imagine A Miracle Music Festival Sept. 24 at St. Mark United Methodist Church, North, with a lineup of 10 musical acts ranging from bluegrass to Gospel to country western and more.

UMs across nation, South Carolina respond after Las Vegas mass shooting

By Jessica Brodie. The shots rang out, and as news broke the prayers—and the Christian help—sprang into action. In the aftermath of the Las Vegas shooting Oct. 1, called the deadliest mass shooting in United States history, The United Methodist Church spoke out and reached out in love and compassion in an effort to be the church for people frightened and in desperate need.

Wesleyan Covenant Association gathering lifts up God’s power to revitalize UMC

United Methodists seeking a return to traditional Wesleyan doctrine and an orthodox, Spirit-filled church gathered across the nation Oct. 14 for a meeting of the Wesleyan Covenant Association. While the live venue was held at The Woodlands United Methodist Church near Houston, South Carolina’s Mount Horeb UMC, Lexington, hosted one of the 64 simulcasts across the United States, drawing a crowd of clergy and laity eager to hear what the WCA had to say regarding the denomination and its future.

Flood brings together Trenholm Road UMC, Centro Cristiano

Jess Torres on the latest chapter in a growing ministry partnership that began in October 2015, when Trenholm Road UMC became the hub of flood relief efforts for the entire Midlands. It was during that time that pastors Henry Alfaro and the Rev. Mike Smith of Trenholm Road developed a friendship that has proven to be the answer to years of prayer that God would provide an opportunity for the church to be in mission and ministry with the Hispanic community in Columbia.

Stewardship Summit: ‘Most younger people don’t even have a checkbook’

If two of the nation’s leading church coaches have it their way, church finance committees would wake up, face what’s happening in today’s culture and take steps to align their stewardship campaigns with the way most people give. (Hint: it’s not with a checkbook.) Jim and Kim Griffith, of Griffith Coaching, will lead a daylong Stewardship Summit titled “Growing Generous Givers” April 21, 2018. The summit is hosted by the South Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church.
